Help... Eclipse viewing turned to pool counseling

My wife's cousin lives in the eclipse belt. We are now at their new house (purchased in May). They had their vinyl pool turn green on them, so they pumped all the water out and left it. It has refilled with rain water and the frogs and alge have taken over. Thought it would be easy to get this going again until....

Lots of wrinkles across the bottom, sides drum taunt, and the kicker, a ripped hole below the stair.

This seems well above my abilities, especially since I leave Tuesday morning, but want to give them some ideas what is realistically ahead of them.

I'm posting on a rural cell network on my phone, so sorry for the clarity.

First, have fun being in the "totality" of the eclipse! Second...they need to fix that tear before even worrying about the frogs and algae. Did they happen to save any of the vinyl liner from installation? If so, they can use that as patch material. I can't tell from the pic, but does that tear go behind the stairs? My liner is held in place by the force of the water against it, so if I drain the water too low the liner is no longer held against the wall. It is much easier to fight algae than it is to try to repair a liner that has pulled away from the wall.

I did find a 6"x12" chunk of vinyl in their pool supplies. I know nothing about vinyl repair. Is that enough? Is a repair right on a edge strong enough?

Re: pulling from wall--The sides are no longer vertical. If the wrinkles were massaged out, it might be better. Does long term direct sun exposure without water shrink a liner?

I don't think that is a tear, it looks like the liner shrunk and pulled out from under the stairs. Its a shame, because that looks like the liner was in good condition before they drained the pool. I don't know if you can patch and put the liner back in place. I think someone who has installed inground liners will have to weigh in on this one.

If there is a bit of liner hanging from under the steps that doesn't show in the picture you can add a patch at that point. I'd ask a pool guy to look at it.

Yeah, I'd tell them to have a pool company come look at it. However, I bet any pool company would rather replace the liner to get some extra revenue and also avoid having potential issues once the pool is filled with the existing liner. It looks to me like it has shrunk from having the pool drained.

It sounds like it's already a liner replacement. The liner has shrunk and will never go back into place properly. If that's the case the liner will fail under the weight of the water.

This is why you never completely drain a vinyl pool.

Is that an extension cord dangling into the pool in the second to last pic?

Thanks all. I passed on the bad news. It a last hail Mary, I took as much water out as I could and tried to work the creases out of the bottom. There is definitely more pool than liner.

This is a re-liner job.

There won't be a fix this season, so I'll put the safety cover in place along with a sump, and some mosquito killer tablets.

I'd blow the lines, but I don't have a 1/4 inch adapter for the pump.

Any other suggestions to prevent infrastructure damage?

Oh... And the cord was a robotic cleaner cord.
