SELMA, NC
Hello from Selma NC. We have an above ground pool that we love dearly and enjoy our grandchildren over for pool time. We have had the pool for 4 years but we have been fighting mustard algae now for 2 years….I need some help, please. We’ve done everything the pool store has told us and it looks like that was all wrong….we have spent a lot of money and not gotten anything for it.

Welcome to TFP!!!

Can you post pictures of the algae?

Here is how to clear it:
  1. You need to be able to test your water to clear the algae. Here are our recommended kits. Link-->Test Kits Compared
  2. When the kit arrives, follow the SLAM process. Link-->SLAM Process
  3. When and ONLY when you have finished the SLAM process, then read and do this:

Hey there!!! Sorry to read you're dealing with algae.
First bit of advice is: STAY OUT of the Pool Store!! They'll rob ya blind with questionable results.
Pics helps us enormously. Sometimes folks think they have Mustard Algae but its just regular nuisance algae. Is the pool in sun all day, or does it have shady areas? Mustard algae happens more often in shady areas.
The GOOD NEWS is the cure is the same:
1) A GOOD test kit ---> Test Kits Compared
2) Liquid Chlorine...10 to 12% is best, purchased at Walmart, Lowes, HD, etc. Pool Essentials is a common brand. Make sure to check the dates of prduction as ideally you want jugs no older than 3 months. Some pool stores sell fresh made chlorine in refillable jugs- ask!

We'll help. Just start a thread in the algae section.
