I am a pool and spa owner in Seminole, FL. I have been managing my hot tub for the 2-3 years that I have owned it, but farmed out the pool to a “pool guy” since I purchased the house that was included with the pool.
I have gotten many questions answered from searching the forum throughout the years and my spa is (almost) always perfect. I have done the dichlor then bleach method, the spa frog (great, but $), and finally settled on bromine and borates as my method of choice (ditching minerals next water change). I do have ozone, but still not convinced it does anything
A few months ago, my pool guy disappeared (actually worried about him), and I took over caring for it. The CYA was off the charts from trichlor, and I spent a very long weekend diluting it and then getting everything else back in balance. In an effort to avoid another sky high water bill I am now using LC, and left enough CYA “space” to use some 3” pucks when I travel (a couple pounds before I reach 50). Kind of a reverse dichlor then bleach method
After several months of almost daily doses of LC, I have gotten kind of sick of this minimal level of effort, and decided to look at automating it. I considered all options (I mean all) and finally decided to go with a SWG (almost did stennar pump).
I have a 15k gallon pool, a VS pump, and only run it 6 hours a day, so I purchased a Circupool RJ-60+ so I could easily produce enough chlorine without needing to extend my pumps runtime (I feel pretty safe
.
Tonight, I added the initial dose of salt, and borates to the pool (don’t want to overshoot and have to dilute again), and plan on installing the SWG myself this weekend. The plumbing is very “tight” so I have been staring at it for about a month, and have finally settled on a plan. Nervous to go hacking into perfectly good plumbing, but confident in the over analyzed and constantly second guessed plan.
For a bit of manual automation, I have been using a Sutro in the hot tub to cheat on testing, so I threw another one in the pool. I plan on running SWG at 100% and adjust the SWG “on” time with a Kasa outdoor smart plug. (1 hour with this SWG should be around 1ppm). Since I will be able to see the FC wherever I am, I can adjust the SWG hours whenever needed. My only issue is the sutro only measures up to 5ppm, so I don’t plan on running the level of CYA recommended by TFP (I want to be able to target 4-5ppm FC).
So…. I just wanted to say hello, and thank everyone for all the great content and providing a wealth of knowledge and answers to thousands of questions that I have had throughout the years. It has been an amazing resource as I learned how to do all this pool/spa stuff!!!
I really appreciate all the help!!!
