Heater Bypass

Is there any risk or downside in bypassing the heater (either entirely or partially) other than when it is being used? Given how restrictive it is, i figured it’d be nice to let the pump work a little easier if it’s not going to hurt anything. The pump’s power usage with it even 50% bypassed is about 40% lower on my system.

Not as long as your water chemistry is good (though that would hurt it, circulating or not). Some of the newer heaters come with an automatic bypass already installed. And be sure to let the water circulate occasionally so any water in the pipes does not get stagnant.

I run water through mine for about 1 or 2 hours every day and then bypass it for the rest of the day.
