Our gas heater is leaking excessively. It is leaking so much that we are noticing water loss in our pool. A pool professional came to look at it last week and said that the heat exchanger is leaking. He said that it will cost almost as much to fix it than to replace the heater. Since we never use the heater and finances are tight right now, we don't want to spend money fixing it or buy a new heater. We just want to get the leak stopped so we won't experience any more water loss in the pool. We've been told that we can either get a bypass installed or have the heater removed and get the area replumbed. It will be cheaper to have the bypass installed than removing it, since we'd have to pay someone else to cap off the gas line and dispose of the heater. Is there any reason why we shouldn't just get a bypass installed and keep the heater in place to save money?

As long as the heater is shut off electrically and the gas to the unit is turned off, there should be no problem leaving it in place and just by-passing the heater. You can the. Have the heater removed when it suits you.
