I'm the owner of an aging spa that has a Hayward Vari-flo XL valve on the sand filter. I've noticed this year that the handle doesn't "seat" all the way back down when you change position, or in any position for that matter. Inside the valve there is a post that goes up the center of the spider valve handle, but I don't know what it does.

Ideas?

The post goes to the diverter. The post has an o-ring that seals between the stem and the lid.

When the oring is dry, the spring can't push the diverter down.

Assuming that the valve is a sp714t, here is how to take it apart and replace the diverter or just clean and lubricate the stem o-ring.

Or, you can replace the whole top part.
