Hayward Solar Controller GL-235 issues...

Well, I'm stumped. After no problems for years, my solar controller won't auto engage the pump. In fact, it only works when I put it on "manual test." Even then, both the cooling and heating lights are on simultaneously. Confirmed that the nocturnal cooling jumper is in the disable position.

I've changed both the sensors, and now the GL-235 control unit itself, with the same result, same symptoms.

The pump timer is and has always been the simple mechanical Intermatic timer.

Would really appreciate any other ideas on how to further track this problem down and kill it.

Thank you!

Wow. Some years ago I was so impressed with the help available from this community I became a Lifetime member. It's sad that everyone with any knowledge or desire to help others have either quit or died. RIP

I do have a never used GL-235 unit that you could have for shipping costs, but think you've already replaced it? Bought it several years ago, but went with Intellicenter instead. Sorry I can't help.

  1. Have you checked the resistance of the sensors to make sure they are or are not bad?
  2. If you have a manual verify and then verify again the connections are in the right place.
  3. Also make sure the set screw is on the bare wire and not on the insulation.
  4. Also remove the connections that have not been removed and make sure they are not corroded. Although they have all been removed and replace when you replaced the unit.
