Opening pool. Water is half way up skimmer so all set in that way. Started the pump and just getting sucking air.

Check the pump basket lid gasket. Be sure it is in place, lubed with pool lube, and properly tightened.
Thank you. I think that’s the issue. Put a plastic bag over it and the air leaking blew up the bag like a balloon.

With an above ground pool, the pump is normally fully primed all the time. But you still need a good seal at the pump basket.
