Hayward Pump and DE Filter

I have a 10 year old Haywood pump and DE filter. After opening up the pool today, I added my DE to my filter and turned on the pump. After about 5 minutes I noticed my PSI had gone to 20% . I immediately turned off the pump and discovered I failed to remove the plastic cover on the return line. After removing the plastic cover, the water nicely flowed out of the the return line. My question is this: do you think I did any damage to the filter especially the cloth fingers? Also, which way does the PSI go if you put too much DE in the filter or not enough--up or down? I always get confused with regard what to what causes the PSI to rise or fall. Another thing--what is the expected life of a 1 hp Haywood pump and DE filter? Thanks for your help in advance.

I didn't have a Hayward DE finger filter but did have a Pentair grid one. I would think that if a finger or fingers were bad you'd get a lot of DE coming out of the return; I used to get a little any time I bumped it or recharged it and they didn't have any holes in it. PSI is measuring resistance so the more "stuff" in the filter, including DE, the higher the pressure. My 1st Pentair pump lasted maybe 5 years but I left it outside during the winter; my 2nd Pentair pump lasted 15 years bringing it into the garage for winter storage. I got rid of it still working because we got a new pool with a sand filter.

I agree with Vinny. ^^ I doubt you did any damage to the fingers. If you did you'd certainly know it by now with a white cloudy mess in the pool. Your filter's psi gauge should go UP in numbers (clockwise) as the pressure increases. If the needle isn't moving at all it may be stuck or the gauge went bad, especially if it was not removed for the winter.
