Hayward impeller ring and diffuser

I'm having a lot of problems with my Hayward TriStar leaking more and more every day this summer so I decided to take a look at it after watching YouTube video and the first thing I noticed was the diffuser ring was worn at an angle and appears to have melted into the diffuser itself creating a bonded black plastic substance to the white diffuser ring. I just ordered a new diffuser and diffuser ring in hopes this will stop the leaking and I'm now thinking that possibly this isn't the problem any suggestions or does this appear to be the fix?

The diffuser and impeller ring would not cause a leak. However, a bad gasket or a crack in the housing or motor plate would.

You need to figure out why they made contact.
As for the leak, where was it leaking from? If it was the motor side of the housing, I would replace the pump shaft seal.

It leaks on the underside of the motor between the motor and the seal plate. Is there a gasket between the seal plate and the motor, I don't see one on the drawing in the owners manual so it would have to be a shaft seal or cracked seal plate correct? What do I look for in a bad shaft seal to determine its bad?

There is a gasket between the seal plate and the pump housing. There is also a shaft seal on the motor shaft behind the impeller. Either one could be causing the leak. Did you get a new go-kit with the new parts? It should have both seals in it.

However, if you replace both, which you should, and you still have a leak, it is likely a crack in the housing.

The shaft seal has a two ceramic surfaces that touch and make the seal. Any damage to either one of these will cause a leak. One side is fixed and the other side is spring loaded. The spring pushes the two faces together.

You still need to find out why the diffuser contacted the impeller. Did the pump run dry?

Is the black part from the impeller or diffuser?

Thanks a lot everyone for all the replies. It really helped guide me through the fix. Aside from the diffuser issue it seems to have been a shaft seal so I ordered a seal kit and fixed it tonight. No leaks all is good! Thanks again!
