Hayward H250FDN

Hi. Just joined but hope to be active here.

I have a Hayward H250FDN. It’s my 3rd one since installing pool in 2010. The latest one was installed under warranty by Hayward in Sept 2015. Yesterday I found it leaking again. Arggggg. Luckily it’s still working. Went out again today and found it not leaking. I spoke to my heater installer and he thinks it’s corroded again and needs to be replaced. Long story short, Hayward won’t help.

I have 3 options in front of me. Looking for opinions:

- Hayward H250FDN
- Hayward H250ED2C
- Raypak PR266-AENC

any input would be appreciated

I have the same heater and if I were in your position, I don’t know if I’d use another Hayward heater. Raypak seems to get good reviews on the forum.

First and foremost, make sure you pool chemicals are in the correct range. That is the only real reason why a heat exchanger leaks.

Don't buy another Hayward. BUT, no matter what heater you get you will destroy it if the chemicals are not right. Get your chemicals stable and then buy a Raypak.

Chemicals are stable. I have it done every 2 weeks. In fact 3 years ago when Hayward replaced it they agreed the damage was NOT caused by the chemicals. Not the case 6 years ago when it was first replaced.

Hayward has now offered me a significant discount on a replacement. My installer has told me to stay away from the FDN but at the discount offered I should consider the H250EDC2 (it will be approx. half the cost of a Raypak).

Anyone have expereince with the H250EDC2 or any thoughts considering the cost difference.

I'm only on year 2 with my 400FDN, but it's been perfect. Related to chemistry, you said you "do it every two weeks." Are you checking with a proper test kit? I typically test 3 to 4 times a week to keep my pH in line. I agree with previous posts that chemistry will nuke a heater pretty quickly.

If the H250ED2 is available by you, then it is a better unit than the FD series. It by far out performed the FD units. I'm guessing that unit is available in Canada where as it is no longer available in the US from my experience.

I still have to question why you have been so many of them. If they all leaked water then you have to double check your water testing, especially the PH. Is the unit bonded to the rest of the equipment? You could also try adding a manual bypass before the heater and maybe bypass some of the water.
