Hayward EC-65 Backwashing Issues

I read through the DE filter cleaning tutorial "stickied"at the top of this forum section and probably learned what I have been doing wrong, even though my filter is the bump style not covered by the tutorial. Thank you for a great tutorial.

My issues had been that after backfushing I could never get the filter to return to it's original, "start of the season", clean pressure level and it would rise back up to the "need to clean" pressure level daily thereafter requiring me to "bump" it back down daily. I learned, from the tutorial, that I am probably recharging the filter with too much DE after the backflush and that I should be mixing the DE into a slurry before dumping it into my skimmer. Two very good points that will probably help me out!

My question is this, the tutorial says that the TFP Forum recommends that the filter be backflushed when it reaches a pressure 20-25% greater than the original clean pressure. My clean pressure is 12 psi, 25% above that is only 15 psi, is this correct for a bump style filter? I had thought I had read somewhere that when you couldn't keep the pressure below 22 psi, for any reasonable length of time, after bumping, it was time to backflush. If I had to backflush when I reached 15 psi I'd be backflushing every few weeks! Maybe the requirements are a little different for a bump style filter.

Hoping I "bump" expert will chime in here and set me straight.

Thanks

a,

The TFP 25% rule is pretty conservative and designed to cover all types of pools, all types of filters, all types of plumbing, etc...

On an individual pool basis, it should be used as a guideline, not an absolute.

What I like to do is get a "feel" for the water pressure returning to the pool. As long as you can feel plenty of water being returned to your pool then (within reason) your filter is fine. When you start to feel the pressure drop off, or if your pressure goes up by more than 10 PSI, then it is time to clean or backwash the filter.

Thanks for posting,

Jim R.
