Hayward 1.85 Tristar VSP Not Working After Hurricane

Hello,

I have a brand new pool which was just completed days before Hurricane Milton hit our town. I was told by the pool installer to shut down breaker and shut off pump before the storm hits. I did that. I checked the pool equipment at the peak of the storm and very soon after the storm and no storm surge reached the pool equipment. There are no water lines on my wall, no debris near the equipment, and the "debris line" in the yard is not close to the pool equipment. Now the pool guys came and said pool pump is shot because was submerged and I need a new one! It is brand new. A few questions: If the pool pump computer interface was damaged by driving rain, wouldn't I just need to replace that part and not the entire pump? Is it possible for the pump to be damaged by driving rain rather than being submerged? How can I avoid paying for an entire new pump when it this is obviously some kind of scam by the pool company vs a defective pump vs a bad electrical installation?

Why did he say it was shot? Said another way, how did he determine it was shot?

Some basic troubleshooting before we get to replacement/fix.

1. Is the breaker actually "ON?"
2. Turn the breaker off, does the pump spin? You should be able to put a hex wrench into the back side of motor and attempt to spin the motor.
3. Turn breaker off, remove the wiring cover, turn breaker on and measure voltage to the pump. BE CAREFUL!!! What is the voltage?

3. If voltage is good, does the screen display work?
4. If the display is good, does it not start the pump? What does it do when you start the pump?

Breaker was on. Screen display flickers for a second "initializing" then goes off. Nothing else works. I am not comfortable with electrical testing. I am getting a second opinion, but this seems pretty strange with a brand new pool and equipment. If the display is fried, can you just replace that? Pool company says I need a whole new pump. I think that is around $2,000 just for that.

He said that the unit won't turn on. He said it must have been submerged in salt water from the hurricane. I said no way because the storm surge did not even come close. He said he checked yesterday to see if it might just be the breaker but supposedly was not the issue. So he says I need a whole new pump. I could understand that MAYBE the computer interface gets damaged by driving rain or something...actually that even seems far fetched because it has a cover over it.....but how does the actual pump get damaged from something like this. Seems if anything, it should just be replace the computer display screen.

If I indeed need to replace the pump, is there something else that is more "sturdy" and weather resistant so I don't need to do this over and over again? Is there a cheaper, more "basic" pump that will get the job done without modifying anything else on the pool equipment setup? Is there such a thing as pool insurance to cover stuff like this?

Show us pictures of your equipment pad and let us see all the equipment you have to determine if a simpler pump is suitable for your setup.

You can thank the US Department of Energy for mandating complex pool pumps with electronic controls that fry in storms.

Do you have a spa, heater, or water features?

Do you have automation?

Maybe a single speed Hayward SuperPump is all you need if you are willing to spend more in electricity for pump reliability.

I am definitely willing to spend more in electricity for pump reliability. This pump has only been in service for a few weeks!!! And I am looking at around $2K to replace it.

I do have a heater, no spa, and no water features.

Find a different Hayward dealer or service center in your area here to file a warranty claim. Your installing dealer should have registered your equipment with Hayward.
When filing a warranty claim do not provide details beyond the pump is not working. Details about what you did, were told to do, or what the dealer told you when they came are not relevant now.
The pump should be repaired/replaced since it was not inundate by floodwaters (act of God) and has a 4 year warranty as part of a Totally Hayward System installed by a authorized dealer.

You have a simple pool with a dinky small filter and a heat pump.

A 1HP Super Pump XE can be bought for $750 if you DIY the install. It will cost more from a Pool Store.

Because the pump was included in the original plans/permits, and has not passed the final inspection from the county yet, the pool builder said I need to put the exact same pump on. He also said that there is a law in FL that does not allow to put a single speed pump on if it is more than 1.15 HP. I looked it up and he is right. I had to pay for the new pump.....$1,665. But I told him I want the old pump as well. I will ask about who the dealer was for it and I will take it to them and see if I can get a new one or refund.

The Hayward Super Pump XE HP is below the 1.15HP limit. They also have .75HP model that would also work for you.
