I've seen too many threads with an intex SWG only lasting a season or two for me to ever give them one penny about it.

But my two cents is still only two cents.

You want the 15k gal version for your sized pool. They’re currently about $275 with in the swim as the seller via amazon and Walmart.
Intex swcgs are fine for what they offer. A cheapish (not as cheap as they used to be) yet reliable plug & play swcg with a built in timer that will usually live about 3-5 years before needing a new cell or simply dying if appropriately sized. I have used them for many years on various sized pools. They can only run 11-12 hours a day- so you definitely don’t want an undersized unit or you’ll still be needing to feed it yourself too.
I personally prefer separate stand alone units- this way if one thing breaks you just replace that part & not start back at square one.
The stand alone intex swcg units have a 2 year warranty for the unit & a 1 year warranty for the cells. I have had good experience with the intex customer service if thats any consolation.
Saltron has the retro hangover model for around $400 which by my calculations would need to operate approximately 12 hours a day in your sized pool - it has a 1 year warranty. Its cells are replaceable for approximately $300.
I had a hangover type unit that was basically free and it was ok- it was much larger than the saltron but they are no longer produced. If you can get one for super cheap thats one thing but I don’t recommend paying full price for them.
The intex units are a better value even at today’s prices.
After that you step up to $600-$800 “real swcg” units with longer lives & more adjustable output.

You have to pick other options via the amazon link you shared then select the seller you prefer.

On Walmart its a bit more straightforward

So I backwashed and rinsed and it's moving water fast again. All the surface pollen is gone, but psi still high when pump is off.

I still have the OEM balls that came with it. Should I go get some sand and switch it out?

They aren’t common because most vsp’s are 220v - not plug & play. You really don’t need a variable speed- a 2speed pump would be plenty efficient. Single speed pumps are a little more common in a combo.
I suspect your current pump & filter will be decent if you replace the sand (filter balls are nasty) and get a gauge. Gauges are like $12 at lowes.
I understand wanting to upgrade but I ran a 16” intex sand filter and accompanying pump (3/4hp i believe) just fine on my pool that size - any pump much larger would have likely been overkill. I would suggest you don’t go bigger than 19” and 1hp if single speed or 1.5hp if 2 speed.
Doheny’s, hayward, xtreme power, pureline (inyopools) and of course intex are all contenders - intex pump motors have a 2 year warranty while I believe most of the others have 1yr.

Thanks yeah, I mainly want to upgrade so I can get a pump with a timer vs the best way one.

But it's good to know I'll be okay with a 1 speed or 2 speed.
