Green pool water/foam

Hi all!

A friend noticed his pool (above ground, sand filter) water turning green, so he put a bunch of algaecide, shock, and a couple of teaspoons of copper sulfate (i told him to stop copper).

Now, the water is still green and is foaming. He is going to try shocking daily and see if this helps over the next few days (PH and chlorine levels are good), but i can't help but wonder if something else is going on (metals??).

Notice the brown scum on the waterline/stairs?

Any ideas appreciated!

Foam is from the algaecide.

Need to follow the SLAM Process

Might have iron or copper, but first you have kill and remove the algae.

I wasn't sure if iron/copper need to be dealt with first (someone had recommended sequestrants) before SLAM, maybe to avoid oxidizing the metals?

SLAM level FC is going to aggravate metals regardless. Sequestrants are quickly consumed by chlorine.

Best to drain or exchange out the water to fresh if good, non metal containing fresh water is available.

Will try to test the metals level. If high, will also try to think where the metals might be coming from. This is municipal water, though heat pump might contain metal.

Heat pumps are typically not a metal that has issues unless you have very low pH for a long time.
