Green pool - Just getting started with BBB

My water clarity is gradually getting better. I can clearly see the algae debris on the bottom in the shallow end and can finally see a shadow of it in the deep end. I still have a lot of pollen in my yard so that is affecting the clarity also.

On another note, one of my kids saw all the bleach bottles I have been using and said, "ew, I don't want to swim in a pool with bleach!". I told him it was the same stuff we were putting in previously with the pucks but I don't know if that swayed him. Do you all have good arguments you use with your kids or others regarding the use of bleach in the pool?

Simple ... tell them they do not have to swim in it if they don't want and enjoy it yourself ... I imagine they will come around pretty quickly

Today is the 9th day since I started the SLAM process. Things are still going ok, but I am getting frustrated with how long the water is taking to clear. The shallow end is pretty clear, but the deep end is still very murky and I'm not seeing much daily progress on it. I have some Sink and Sweep left over from last season and have considered using it to accelerate the water clarification in the deep end. any reason why I shouldn't do this?

Also, when I started the SLAM process, my CYA was at zero. I added some when I began but have not checked it during the SLAM. When should I test the CYA again?

I wouldn't use the Sink and Sweep. I don't even know what it is.
If it's been a week since you added CYA go ahead and test for it. Adjust your SLAM level for the CYA level. This might be slowing things down too. FC level not at SLAM level for the CYA level.
It takes time to get it crystal clear as your seeing. Run your pump 24/7.

Sink and Sweep is a flocculant made by Aqua Chem.

I have been running pump 24/7 since process started. Getting worried about wearing it out from such constant use and also the electricity bill.

The CYA should remain stable in your pool but you can do a reassurance test if you like. The important parameter in you process is chlorine. Please tell us where your FC is currently and how often you are testing and replenishing.

I wouldn't use the flocculant as they sometimes do harm and absolutely no good. Throwing something in your pool because it's left over is not good practice (but we see it on this forum all the time so I am not singling you out)

Your pump is made to run like that. It's fine. Can't help with the electricity, though.

Tell us more about your FC applications and we'll see if we can't get your SLAM finished up. Pics of the pool water (currently) always help

Here are some pics of the pool water currently.

I am testing the water each morning and evening and adjusting chlorine level at those times. I am keeping the FC at 12 based on PoolMath.

Please let me know if any additional info would be helpful.

When you adjust FC how much has it fallen ? The FC level might not be staying where it should be,SLAM level long enough. What CYA level did you shoot for in the beginning ? Test for it again to see where the CYA level is.

POP!!!

Sand filters take awhile, so you just need to give it time. On the spectrum of people clearing their pools from a swamp, 9 days is normal. The more you brush, the better.

You are now entering the most frustrating stage of the process. We see it time and time again. Seems like the progress is completely stalled, but it's not. Think about it in terms of percentage of the whole. A 15% clarity improvement from motor oil is very noticeable, but a 15% clarity improvement from "a little cloudy in the deep end" may not be very noticeable at all.

Keep at it.

Some thoughts:
You only have the one skimmer.... how is the main drain plumbed? Does it have a separate valve? Or are there two holes in the bottom of the skimmer? You may be missing the diverter in the skimmer. Or the genius who filled in the other skimmer might have blocked the main drain. It's worth knowing. Have you tried aiming one of the return jets downward at the deep end? That will get the dead algae/cloudiness stirred up into circulation so the filter can grab it.

@Richard320 Good questions. I am a first time pool owner so did not think to ask those questions when I bought the house. I have tried to aim one of the return jets towards the deep end but don't think it has made much difference.

Here is a photo of the inside of my skimmer. Does it provide any clues?

@pwrstrk Yes, I have done an OCLT and it confirms nothing is consuming chlorine. ?

@duraleigh @Smykowski Trying to work on my POP constantly. ?. It has wreaked havoc on my beer budget since I have been off work all this past week. ?. Also, the PSI on my filter has remained steady. It was going up when I added DE but didn't see that making much difference so stopped doing that.

If - remember,if - there are no three-way valves between the suction port in the bottom there and the pump, then I'd say you're missing the diverter. One of those two holes is suction, the other either goes to a holes just below the skimmer in the wall, as a low-water level protection, or to the main drain. The diverter allows you to adjust the suction between skimming and main drain. Look around where the rest of the junk the old owner left behind for something that looks like this:

If you don't have one, just measure the opening and go to the pool store. I bought a generic thing off the shelf for about ten bucks.

What is that round thing at 2:30? Is it a puck? Or does it pivot to block off a port while you're vacuuuming?

@Richard320 I haven't seen anything that looks like a diverter in the stuff left by the previous owner, but may need to check into that.

Not sure what the round thing at 2:30 is. Definitely not a puck. I tried moving it and it won't budge.

Still SLAMming and one of my kids just asked if it's safe to swim. My FC was at 7 this morning and I added 2 jugs of bleach around 10am. Ok to swim or not?
