Granular Chlorine

I have a 30k gallon salt pool with a vinyl liner in Iowa and have been using liquid chlorine to boost my salt cell after hosting parties or if my FC gets too low (like right now after fighting phosphates).

I’m tired of worrying about the liquid splashing and ruining clothes and also don’t love storing all the gallons.

I am looking for a granular that is equivalent to liquid without CYA in it.

I was using BioGuard Smart Shock but found out it has CYA in it. Do you recommend their Burnout 3 or Burnout 73 instead? What’s the difference between those?

Or do you recommend a totally different brand?

I want something that is easy to dissolve and would love if it didn’t require pre-dissolving.

Thanks!!

Unfortunately every type of chlorine has something eles in it. Just have to pick the lesser of two evils, unless you can make it work for you two fold. It would be best if you found out what these brands are actually consisted of chemically wise.

Usually liquid chlorine is the lesser of all evils. Only byproduct is salt. You can buy a screw on spout that slows down the flow and gets it closer to the water reducing splashing. I also wear junky clothes when chlorinating and always after dusk. Cal-hypo adds calcium, I always pre-dissolve in a 5 gal bucket and use a paint stirrer on a drill letting it soak for at least 20 minutes, but it can be broadcasted over pool then brushed to dissolve so it doesn't bleach the floor, dichlor and trichlor adds about 50% CYA, Potassium Monopersulfate (non chlorine shock) adds sulfates which algae uses but as long as you keep your FC up and water balanced you don't need to worry about phosphates too much.

Use the pool math affects of adding and you will see what I'm talking about.

If you lower the jug of chlorine into the water and just tip it over the liquid will flow out without splashing. Is your SWG big enough for your pool? You shouldn’t really need to keep lots of liquid around.

Cal hypo also adds calcium along with the fc- you may be able to stand some or may not- too much calcium causes scaling.
What is your current ch level?
What size is your pool?
What swcg do you have?

Huge +1. If you need LC with any kind of frequency, your FC target is too low, likely way too low.

You paid good money to *not* lug jugs. Use the dang thing. #teamrunhot :)

Once you're sanitary, you can stop caring about phosphates because algae food is irrelevant when algae can't grow in the first place.

I add liquid at the return water jet. Water level is approx 8 inches below the pool deck but I can easily reach water level while kneeling on the deck. Since I only use liquid to "adjust" the Free Chlorine (FC) level provided by my Salt Water Chlorine Generator (SWCG), I can usually get by adding a dose from the jug to a 32 ounce plastic measuring cup. No splash. I then add the contents of the cup in a "pencil size" stream to the moving water. No splash. Even when adding LC directly from the jug, I do it at the return jet and the pencil size pour. FWIW  (Storage varies with your particular need.)
