Going to Start Over - Need Advice

Hi Everyone!

I’ve had an Intex 48x15 round pool for 3 summers now. The first year was a complete disaster and then I found this forum and the second was better and this summer was great! Clear water, I felt like I knew what I was doing!

However, the legs and poles of the pool are very rusted (bulging and hunks of rust will flake off) and I worry that they aren’t strong enough to be safe. The pool also took a beating during Harvey. So I’m planning on trashing this one and starting over in the very early spring.

i enjoyed the size of the pool. I’d upgraded the pump to a Intex Modle 633T (which supposedly pumps 2,500 gal per hour - don’t know about that). What I DO know is that it was not strong enough to even use a vacuum hose attached to the water intake to clean the pool. I had to use a separate battery operated Pool Blaster Catfish vacuum to clean the pool.

I’d love to get feedback regarding if anyone has a different pool brand that holds up well of if the Intex is the pool of choice for this size pool. And I NEED HELP on understanding what other pump options would provide enough power to use one of those whale/shark automatic vacuum cleaners. I spent ALOT of time vacuuming this pool (it’s partially under a tree) because I couldn’t get enough suction power.

Thanks!
Ashley

Soft sided pools like Intex or Coleman are the best buy for your money. My previous Intex was up for 7 years which is pretty hard to beat.

I changed over to non-Intex pump/ sand filter combo years ago before Intex offered a pump that did not use the paper filters. If you are looking for a budget friendly purchase, an Intex (or Coleman) with an Intex sand-filter pump upgrade is your best bet - just do not go with the smallest pump combo. You want to be over the minimums here. If you want a pump and filter that might be built to last a little longer, you can add any brand of pump or filter to any pool, you may just have to get some fitting adapters which are easy to find for Intex. I also purchased an auto vacuum that connects to the suction and that is also highly recommended.

I also strongly suggest looking at going to salt water. I will never have a non-salt water pool again.

I did have some rust, but my 18x48 metal frame was up for 7 years, the last 6 on salt so hard to say it was the salt that caused the rust. Just the age and use of the pool is going to lead to some rusting at the joints.

The main rust was at the T-connections where the coating would chip off from movement. I ended up taping the joints with white electrical tape (the pole were white) and that seemed to stop the rusting. When I took it apart this spring, the poles were basically fine - it was just the T-connectors that were rusted pretty bad.

The new Intex ultra-frame style has polycarbonate T-connectors and that is a nice improvement so you no longer have metal-on-metal rubbing at the joints (at least for the round pools). Should help extend the life even more.
