Getting started

Hello everyone, this is my 2nd year using this method and I’m getting a late start. We just got the pool topped of and the filter going. Got what we hope is all the leaves and debri out. We did not end up doing a proper closing last year and we are paying for it now. It’s probably at 50% New water if not more and it’s of course green/black. My question is do i have to wait to add bleach until the cya level is where it needs to be or can they be done together? I’m assuming I’d be wasting my bleach until it’s where it needs to be but just want to make sure. I didn’t have to mess with the cya any last year so that’s a new thing this time. I had added some the pool store told me to add last year and got lucky they got that right. That was my only trip to them last year, and my last one ever, i found you guys right after that. So to raise cya i need conditioner? Or stabilizer? Or is that the same thing? I’ll post my results of my preliminary tests and could use guidance . Thanks so much in advance!! I’m using a Taylor test kit. I think 2005. It has the dpd powder with it.

FC 0
CC 0
TA 30
Ph 7.0
CYA less than 30, probably 0

Just make sure your CYA is definitely at 30 (dot gone). Then increase FC to "12" and SLAM away! Maintain the FC as much as you can and follow the SLAM page guidance for best success (link below).

Same thing really - "Cyanuric Acid". We generally recommend the cheaper granules you'll find in the local store's pool section for about $17-$20 in a 4lb bottle.

Good luck!
Adding CYA:
To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. Squeeze the sock periodically to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.

This might sound stupid but the pool calculator says i need 5lbs. Does that mean i put in multiple socks or just refill it until I’ve used 5lbs? I don’t picture 5lbs fitting in one sock. Or could i put half in a sock in front of return and half in a sock in the skimmer and speed up the process?

Either way is fine. Whatever works best for you. Just make sure to squeeze the sock frequently to help it dissipate from the sock(s) quicker.
