If you're not regularly using clarifiers, flocs, or other potentially problematic pool store recommendations then your sand should last the lifetime of the pool. Sand does not appreciably wear down with normal filtration use and there's no reason to replace it on a regular basis.
This one never ceases to amaze me from the pool stores bag-O-tricks. Vantiem I am not saying you did or didn’t follow the pool store. But for those that did, they sell folks tons of stuff to gum up the sand, then sell them greatly overpriced bags of sand once a year because the sand ‘went bad’.
If you did use those products, or you suspect the previous owners did, start new once (now) and be done forever. The sand filter I inherited when we moved was all kinds of gummed up. Big clumps of sandy goo. Green ones of course.
I just replaced mine now after 10 yrs on the 1st time I replaced it. Yes I do see a difference and no I don’t use additives in my pool. I also would deep clean it by removing the top and all it’s bolts. Sift the sand with the hose running and get the water/sand clear. I read on here many times sand doesn’t need replacing but through my experience it does.
Im with you here, after 10 years. I’d replace it too, not because it went bad in any way but because I’d be to lazy to deep deep deep clean 10 years of stuff that didn’t backwash.
