Freezing temperature prep

Hey everyone!
This place has been very helpful for me over the last year.
I live in north Georgia - Woodstock area. I called a couple of local pool maintenance places a few months ago and asked them about closing our pool, and both said that fully closing and covering a pool in georgia is actually pretty rare - most people just put a net over it for fall to catch the leaves and leave it open through the winter, switching off the salt cell and manually adding chlorine makes it easier to maintain chemicals and makes for much easier 'opening' again in spring. We're also only running the pump for 6 hours a day to turn the water over and keep it somewhat filtered.
So thats what we're doing - have the net over it, all good.
However tonight and a few nights this week the temperature is dropping to freezing (32). Is there anything I should be doing to prep for this? Should the plumbing be flushed out, or should the pump be on (I know water in motion requires a much lower temperature to freeze?) The conversation I had with the guys didnt go into detail about what to do in the middle of winter, just that it's not necessary to fully close and cover. If I don't need to do anything for the temperatures this week, what should I be doing if it drops 10 below in the middle of winter?

Just keep the water moving. That will protect anything from freezing. For period in the winter where a power outage could impact water movement, be prepared to have a Plan B such as draining the filter & pump and/or covering your equipment pad during those hard freeze hours. But if water is moving you should be fine.

If it helps any, our pool up here never has ice on the water even when it gets down to ~25F which is pretty rare. I do get ice on the cover for a couple days sometimes but I’d expect being farther south you don’t have much to worry about.

Yeah a night or two near or below freezing isn't going to hurt you. Especially if your water temp is still over 40 degrees or so. The link above regarding the physics of freezing is VERY helpful, I learned a lot from that. As mentioned before, you can keep your pump running if you're worried...

Do you have freeze protection to turn on your pump when Temps get low? This will be the 5th winter I've had a pool and I've never closed, nor had any problems.

My equipment is in a pump house that stays fairly warm, but I do worry a bit more since the big freeze in Texas! I know a lot of people there had damage then.

Out of the pool owners in my sub division, only one covers their pool in winter.
