I have a dilemma. I live in the Houston area, slightly south; it’s supposed to be below freezing for over 24 hours. I know the pool pump needs to run for freeze protection to keep the pipes from freezing but nobody will be home and there is a great possibility we will lose power. My question is should I just shut the system down and drain everything and leave it open to atmosphere or is there something else I should do? If I drain everything and leave it open I’m not worried about the pumps, filters and other equipment freezing. Just the underground piping.

In Houston the likelihood of underground pipes freezing is as close to zero as you can get.
If you are comfortable in being able to fully drain the surface equipment, do it.
If you are comfortable in being able to fully drain the surface equipment, do it.
