Freeze Protection Mode

Hello, new pool owner going on 2 years. I have a question and hoping someone out there can help me. I have a pool/spa combo and a Hayward Prologic 8 system. Anyways, when my pool goes into freeze protection mode my spa drains. I called the builder and there telling me this is normal. Is that correct?

Welcome to TFP.

Your SUCTION and RETURN actuators are switched and plugged into the wrong sockets.

Open up your OMNI panel. Find where the actuators are plugged in. And reverse the plugs.

Freeze protection activates the spillway mode. Pool and spa modes activate both actuators, suction, and return. The spillway is supposed only to activate the return actuator. Since your freeze circuit is activating the suction actuator, this is an indicator that the valve actuators are plugged into the opposite sockets.

You can either open it up and switch their plugged sockets or physically swap the actuators between the suction and return valves. Swapping the sockets is a much easier method of changing the operation.

I will just be kind and say your builder does not understand automation systems.

I have a Prologic systen

SUCTION and RETURN sockets are on the lower left of the board.

Thanks for the info. I will let my pool guy know by showing him what you sent me. It doesn’t do this only in the freeze protection mode. Normal operating system the spa stays full. I do have the spa spillover set to a timer each day for 2 hours a day.
I cannot tell what you are saying.

Does your SPILLOVER mode work correctly with suction from POOL and return to SPA.

If it is not reversed actuators then your return actuator is not turning correctly when in FREEZE protection mode.

Either way, the spa should not drain when freeze protection is cycling.

Yes, my pool guy placed the actuator in the off position on the suction side today to see if that resolves the spa draining in the freeze protection mode
That does not fix whatever the problem is.

As you tell I don’t know anything how the pool system works.

Well then you are at the mercy of your Pool Guy unless you want to learn about it.

What I was trying to tell you is that my system normally works no spa draining when it’s off or during the pool filter system is running.

That does not tell me if your system works properly in SPILLOVER mode.

You can enable the Spa Spillover in the Configuration Menu.

You use a GROUP function assigned to an AUX button to schedule the spa spillover to run automatically. The GROUP function uses an AUX button and an AUX relay.

You either need to pick an AUX relay with no equipment connected to it, or if you have no empty AUX relays, you need to combine some equipment to create an empty relay for the spillover function.

There is no way to decouple the AUX button for the spillover from the relay with the equipment it powers.

You can only assign one time period to each AUX button.

However if you have two extra AUX buttons and relays available, you can assign different time periods to each while having the same functions.

The only downside to a GROUP function is that it uses one of the AUX relays.

Sir, when you say reverse them is it just like a switch like under the actuator? Can I give you my number and talk with you tomorrow? Maybe we can jump on a video call. I will send you a bottle of good ole bourbon. Lol

At this point, I am no longer certain that this is your problem.

More diagnostics are needed when your Prologic switches to FREEZE mode.

You need to flip the toggle switch on the suction actuator back ON the correct setting as it was.

You need to turn on your SPA and observe if both actuators turn.

I think your RETURN actuator may have died on you.
