First time pool startup

If you have leaves and other junk in the water, best to get those out with a leaf rake/net. Some people recommend not running the robot in SLAM water but I figure if it’s safe for people it should be safe for robots. I wouldn’t even wait on the brushing to start the SLAM though. If you don’t have a recommended test kit, I’d get one of those on order ASAP and then add 5ppm chlorine to the water until the kit arrives. Then post a full set of test results to figure out how to start your SLAM.
Okay I just purchased the kit. Currently filling up the pool (it’s not at skimmer level yet). So when I’m able to actually turn the pool on, while I wait for this test kit. Just throw in up to 5ppm of chlorine? Tabs? Powder? Sorry super new to this - trying to do it myself without hiring a pool company.

Just get some liquid chlorine (I got mine a home depot but seems walmart is better prices for their pool essentials 10%).

Oh and if you aren't currently use
PoolMath & share your logs so people can help more.

Cool. I mean should I buy in bulk? Will I be needing like 20+ gallons for the slam? Or just buy one until I start the actual slam method

No way to know really, from mine it was a lot but mine was also extreme.

Typically, I like to have 10 gallons on hand to start then will pick up chunks as I need.

Plaster because I'm sure you don't have straight gunite
Cool thanks. Also don’t know my exact pool gallons but I was told 35-45k. Pumped to get this going and hoping to learn so I can just do this all myself in the future. Last year was our first season with it (pool is actually super old we just moved here) and I let it go and it was really bad for probably half the season with algae and I had a tiny filter (1/4 the size of what I needed to clear the pool) which couldn’t really filter out all the cloudy dead stuff.

You'll be able to narrow down your size as you test, dose, log with the kit

Hi!

I just filled up the pool. So prime and run it. Then after that first step is check and manage the PH. Then find out the CYA / slam goal and keep the chlorine level up to slam levels? Should I pour the first chlorine dose in the evening?

Did you get your test kit? Can you post a full set of results? That would help...

Should I just post the results of the chlorine and PH level? Or do I need to do the chlorine drop test, calcium hardness test, TA, and CYA as well?
don’t use the yellow OTO chlorine test. Use the powder and pink water test for chlorine (FAS-DPD).

Thank you. So if the solution does not turn pink and I have no chlorine, then I don’t need to test for Free chlorine since there is no chlorine? Sorry this may seem like an obvious question, but as a total noob had to ask.
