First time letting it freeze

First time winterizing in Minnesota. Water level about 7" below intake. Couldn't get it completely clean as I was fighting the leaves with no leaf cover but will have that figured out next year. How does it look? Going to rain tomorrow so will accumulate more water on top of cover. Will that be a problem?

Thanks for the great forum!

Put a pump in to clear the water on top of the cover until it does freeze.

The water is seeping up through the cover. If I put a pump on it, it would run the pool dry. Did I just get a bad cover? I ordered it from inyopools i believe.

Was it supposed to be a mesh cover or a solid cover?

With a mesh cover that drains water into the pool you need to monitor the water level during the winter and pump it down if it gets up towards the intakes.

A solid cover better maintains the lowered water level and you pump the water that pools on it off. I don't know what type of covers are best for an above ground pool.

I've used a micro mesh cover on my AGP pool before. What you want to do is the following....

The cover should not be resting on the water. You should put a few floats in the pool and pull the cover tight so it sits above the water. The water will just drain through the cover into the pool and the leaves will be suspended above the water and blow off once they dry. You are creating a sort of 'leaf soup' by having the leaves and dirt just rest on the cover touching the water.

Also, I can't tell by that picture but with a mesh cover I would make sure that the water can't get into the skimmer or the return. Although you drained 7 inches below them the rain will make the water level rise and when it freezes can cause significant damage.

However make sure 100% sure that its a mesh cover. If its a solid cover and you pull it tight your polls will bend inward.

Skimmer and return are all removed. It's just the holes. Should I have left them attached? What do you recommend as floats? My pillow has already lost a decent amount of air and it's just getting down to freezing temps today. And yes it is 100% mesh. Thanks for the suggestion, best I've heard yet!

The pillows are useless. I basically just use a couple of large tubes or some 72" whale float I got for $5. Just anything that will elevate the cover off the water. And pull it nice and tight and taught.

Regarding the holes you probably need a threaded return plug for the return. Something like this. https://www.poolzoom.com/1-5-plug-w-o-ring-wht.html?keword=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlf-K4_2_3gIVBY1pCh1vQwBUEAQYAyABEgKuhvD_BwE

Regarding the skimmer you want a skimmer plate I think. I use the aquador but you have to change the face plate of the skimmer return. You can use any plate really just search skimmer plate or something. Otherwise as water gets into skimmer box since its a mesh cover and will just keep filling up it could freeze.. Someone posted this picture last year. However it should be noted other people have not done anything and have been fine.

Also I would read this thread. This is the best thread I've seen about micromesh covers........ Anyone Using a Mesh Winter Cover? - Page 2
