First Pool Newbie

Check the CH of the water coming out of the deep end later this afternoon. It should still be very close to 500 ppm.

Its been almost 13 hours. I just checked CH on the fill bucket (tap water) and from the deep end pumps:

Fill bucket tap water CH: 175
Deep end pump discharge CH: 350

So either my initial test of my pool at 500 CH was wrong, or I have some dilution in my water exchange. Either way I am still getting mostly the old water out and new water in. At this point I am in it for the long haul. Process should be complete by tomorrow afternoon. I will run the pump from then through tomorrow night and I will post the results.

Overnight is a good plan. If you brush the pool really good you can test sooner. I suspect you had some mixing because you did not have a large temperature difference and this is not a saltwater pool.

Good news! I stopped the exchange yesterday afternoon, brushed and vacuumed the pool and the ran the pump all night. (Also had a lot of rain last night)
Here are my latest test results:

CYA: 60
FC: 22
CC: .5
CH: 275
TA: 70
PH: 7.5

The CYA test is a bit tricky...but I was reading consistently above 100 before so I'm excited. I think I can maintain the pool at this level and also hopefully get that number to go down a bit more over time. What do you think?

Just thought I would update my initial thread from last year. After going through the water exchange to get my CYA under control last year, the rest of the summer was smooth sailing. Our water was clear and the family enjoyed it all summer. The water exchange was a big deal and kind of stressful, but after that it was easy to maintain. I learned a ton and I feel confident with my pool now. When I closed the pool in October, I raised the CH to SLAM level and closed the pool perfectly balanced. We just opened the pool last week and I was pleasantly surprised to see the pool was still very clear and even had a bit of chlorine left over. Everything is balanced and ready to go. This site has been invaluable. Thank you all for your help!

I know what you're meaning. Just wanted you to know that CH here means Calcium. What you meant was FC. Just trying to help you learn. Good job. If you need anything just ask.
