First hard plumbing attempt

Boston, MA
I purchased a new pump and the fittings were different than the old one (Game/Intex vs 1.5 inch). I used the following parts to connect pump to filter:

  1. 1.5 inch pvc pipe (10 feet)
  2. 1 pvc elbow
  3. 2 pvc 1.5 inch MPT
  4. 1 flex pvc coupling
  5. Teflon tape
  6. Pipe cement
It was sort of an emergency job and there was zero help at the big box store so I used the coupling instead of a pvc union. This actually gave me more flexibility to have the pipes slightly off-line. I have one tiny leak and I attribute that to poor pipe cutting- will fix in the future when I do some more to the pool.

That does not look like a reliable set up and could blow apart when your not home and empty your pool. I would recommend re-doing the pressure line from the pump to the filter. Those are dwv fittings and not rated for pressure and the rubber fernco is the weakest link. Be sure to get pressure fittings (they have a deeper socket) and use a hard coupling or union instead of the rubber fernco.

those fittings and fernco adapter are made for zero pressure drain side applications, and will likely fail sooner than later. Consider the attempt great practice and go grab the right stuff that shouldn't be more than $20.00, even if just for the peace of mind. If you were at lowes, you bought the elbow in a section that is next to the schedule 40 stuff, so look left or right and you will see the schedule 40 area.

The other option is to run 1-1/2" reinforced flexible tubing from the pump to the filter, which is common in many systems.

Thank you
They are scdl 40 but I do not believe they are pressure fittings. It should stamped on the fitting.
Pipe is rated 330 psi. Other than Fernco I think I am good but will double-check. Thanks again.

Don't know who's DWV elbow you are using but here's the description from the Home Depot site:

The NIBCO 2 in. PVC DWV 90 Hub x Hub Elbow is built for use with non-pressurized drain, waste and vent systems to help remove wastewater from plumbing fixtures. The fitting features a PVC construction. The PVC DWV 90° elbow features a hub x hub connection and is used to change the direction of flow.
  • PVC construction
  • For use with non-pressurized drain, waste and vent systems to help remove wastewater from plumbing fixtures
  • Helps air circulate in drainage piping
  • Solvent welded connections
  • Apply a primer to the PVC before cementing
  • Maximum working pressure of 5 psi
This is typical of DWV pipe. Haven't come across Sch40 DWV before (but I'm not a pool expert or builder). Also, as others have pointed out, the contact surface area of DWV joints is about 1/2 regular Sch40. Just be sure that your DWV elbow really is Sch40 (it should be clearly stamped on the elbow).
