Finally finished with the slam after opening the pool. Now once again like last year I'm faced with staining. I did everything I could to get rid of the metal causing the stains last year. I know I'm going to have to get vitamin C to clear the staining up but how can I keep this from happening. Last year I did three water exchanges trying to eliminate the copper in the pool. Had my tap water tested and the copper levels are extremely low. This has to be from being told to used No Mor Problems before I found this site. Any ideas on fixing this issue??? My liner is even staining from it. FYI when I started the slam my pool was pretty clear. Wasn't perfect due to being closed for winter but looked decent. So I know the staining isn't from algae it has to be from the metals like last year. I did do a test with a vitamin C tablet and within a few minutes the stain disappeared..

There's a few different things going on, so I'll find you some better experts than me! Could you just confirm the following for when they get here?

To summarize...

You've had repeated metal staining each spring, tested and verified with the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) test.

You have just finished a SLAM and met all three criteria

You used a fair bit of "No Mor Problems" (bromine algaecide) last year. Were the water exchanges done after the bromine algaecide (No Mor Problems)?

You did water exchanges last year with the hope of reducing your copper level (Was the copper level in the pool high? Could that have come from copper based algaecides?)

Thanks in advance for filling in a few gaps, and I'll go see if I can get some experts to help you along.

Is your pool swg or regular chlorine?

If regular chlorine, try the Metal Magic Sponge test to see if you can simultaneously remve the staining AND sequester the metal. Here's info: http://www.proteampoolcare.com/images/uploads/MetalMagicSpongeTest.pdf

What type of sequestrant and on what frequency of dose have you used in the past?

If its copper from NoMore, you may also be able to clean it with dry acid in a sock. If AA works, you can do a spot treatment on the white parts by loading a hollow dishwasher sponge wand with a mix of AA and water, then immediately add a startup dose of sequestrant.

I suggest these approaches to avoid the AA treatment whn you've just finished a slam...you don't have to drop FC for spot treatments.
Also, are you regularly controlling ph to around 7.2? That helps avoid staining, but in this case, its a byproduct of slam. Hope these ideas help.

I think your problem is from iron in your local water supply. The AA treatment works for this but it is a temporary fix. You will be doing it every year. I had the same problem and the way I finally got ahead of the game was to capture rain water and snow melt.Over the course of 4 yrs now my stains have all but disappeared. Another alternative is to have water trucked in. Another thing that will help if you keep your PH around 7.2. I never add water with the hose anymore unless it's an emergency and my water is getting to low. I also only back wash according to pressure gauge instead of after every vacuum like I use too. Water with no iron is the key for me.

If you live in an older subdivision that used cast iron pipes vs. PVC for there water lines, you probably have iron in your water. Even newer subdivisions that uses pvc can also have it if they branched of an existing water line that was cast iron pipe.

I know you live in Fl. and don't get any snow but with the rain you get you should be able to do this also and even in a shorter amount of time.
