I have finally finished setting up my intex ultra xtr 18'x52" and have a water delivery coming tomorrow since I am on well water and do not want to risk my well pump burning out.

Just a couple questions.

I am going with the haywood skimmer and wanted to know can I cut it in with only a few inches of water or should I have atleast a foot or so of water in the pool?

The water we are having delivered is untreated water so what chemicals should I have on hand for the day the pool is filled and what do I need to add right away?.
I will take a sample of the water to my local pool store to get tested aswell I just don't want anything to happen between that time.

Thanks for all the info I got on here I think my pool area came out great. I still need to do the landscaping but the pool itself is done and will be ready for a quick swim before it is closing time for the season lol. It took me a lot longer to do this work then I had thought but being disabled and only working a few hours every now and the will do that. Here are some pictures of the finished project.

I added a sub panel in my garage to run the electrical for the pool and a outdoor plug.
I put down some foam board under the pool and it made the floor nice and comfortable to walk on while I was in the pool getting rid of the wrinkles in the liner. There is one wrinkle I couldn't get rid of and hope with the full water pressure on it that it flattens out.

Love all the pictures and the hard work!

You will want to add CYA and chlorine right away. Make sure you have the PoolMath app so you can use the "effects of adding" to see how much to add. I did not see a volume in your post, but if you add that to the app, it will tell you the right amounts.

Also use the FC/CYA Chart to set your levels.

ooohhhh, don't do that. Why start off on the wrong foot with this new beauty? Make sure you get a good test kit, and use it to manage a truly Trouble Free pool.

Test Kits Compared

Also, fill out your signature so others can see all the details of your equipment. If you stick with pool store testing, you will surely end up with water issues, and the details of your pool, equipment, test kit etc. will help others quickly see what can be done.

Thank you for the info, so far I have some chlorine tabs and that is it, I have to go to the store tonite to get the rest of the stuff mentioned. It is roughly 6900 gallons. And I have no idea on how to maintain a pool so have been doing alot of reading on swimuniversity and on here.

I will setup my signature aswell

Do as suggested above ⬆️
Get a test kit ordered asap
(Taylor k2006c - amazon or other retailers
or tf100 - www.tftestkits.net )
Use the sock method to add 30ppm worth of granular stabilizer/cya & add 5ppm worth of liquid chlorine immediately & each day until your kit arrives & u can test & dial things in according to recommended levels
Use PoolMath to calculate amounts.
This will explain how to add each chemical

I would wait to cut the skimmer in until the water level is near the bottom of the skimmer (maybe within a few inches) so the liner is stretched closer to where it will end up & your hole won’t end up wonky.

Thanks, I just seen a video where the skimmer is easy to install with the pool nearly full, I was just worried about loosing water but with installing it then doing the cutout it makes sence.

U can use the tabs in a floater but u must understand what they do - they add cya, as well as chlorine, the chlorine gets consumed daily but the cya remains & builds up making it harder & harder to follow the FC/CYA Levels
They are also acidic & will lower ph which can put u on a merry go round with ph & ta.
They are not recommended for daily chlorination for those reasons & best left for when u just need a little cya or to help chlorinate when u need to go on vacation if your cya can withstand it.
Here’s the estimated effects of each dissolved 3” puck has on your pool volume

How do I know how much to add to get the 30ppm and 5ppm for 6900 gallons?
Take a look at my post above, there is a link to the PoolMath app. @Mdragger88 posted a picture from the app with regards to the pucks, that's the same app you will use to determine how much chemicals to add based on your volume. Just change the addition you want to make, and see what it will do.

cya 6900.jpg
I changed my volume to 6,900, and chose "dry stabilizer". I just changed the amount to add until you see how much it will change. So for your situation, 1.75 lbs. will get you to 30 CYA.

Once you start using your own tests, and logging the results in poolmath, you will see what to add, based on both your specific pool, and the results of the test. For example, if you had 10ppm of CYA in the water, and the target was 30, the app would tell you how much to add. In this case, we don't have a test kit yet, but know the CYA is zero, so we use the "effects of adding" section in the app.

Ok I got it now. For some reason the other time I clicked the link for the app it didn't open my playstore for it.
Is shock the same as stabilizer?
I was searching online and seen shock and stabilizer with conditioner or chlorine woth stabilizer.
I was thinking of getting this as it is available at the local pool store

And this liquid chlorine

Is shock the same as stabilizer?
They are NOT the same. "Shock" is not a word really used by those that subscribe to TFP, but can be used to talk about more potent chlorine, but is NOT at all the same.

For you stabilizer/CYA, you could use granular CYA, and get it in the pool using the sock methods. You CAN use liquid stabilizer/conditioner/CYA (sometimes the products have these names on them), but it is much more expensive than the solid form, and you need to use the full gallon at a time to insure proper results. Sometimes the liquid gallons are not mixed all the way through, so adding a half gallon will not get you the results you need, then the next half may do something different at a later date.

Check Amazon for the stabilizer as well. Something like this is 100% CYA...

Puri Tech brand CYA is also been recommended, but sometimes out of stock.

For the chlorine, 10%, 12.5%, all work. You linked to Leslies, but Home Deport, Walmart, box box stores often have it, but if the pool store is close, and the chlorine is at your price point, any percentage in that range will work. Just don't let them test your water!

Ok, thanks, I will order that cya from Amazon then, jist figured liquid was better and fast to get into the water. I will look up the sock method. Using the poolmath app it is saying that the ideal level for cya is 40-50 so I will try and get it there using the app recommendation of how much to use of the granules. I only posted from the pool store because my local walmart doesn't have any pool stuff out anymore

The liquid CYA is quicker to get the CYA in the water, but not better, and for sure not cheaper. If you are ok with the cost, and use a full gallon at a time, the liquid CYA, like real liquid CYA is perfectly fine, it is just a lot more expensive, parts per million vs. parts per million, but if you do want to use it, knowing what you know, it is just fine, also make sure it is just liquid CYA, and not some pool store potion.

Further CYA reading

will look up the sock method
You can search here for the sock method, a lot of posts, but it is real simple. Add the amount you need (or can fit into a sock if you need more than one) and tie it up. I use fine hair nets, the same ones I use for my skimmer socks, but can also use nylons, but it is usually a sock. Tie the sock to some kind of stick, and let it sit in the water, in front of a return while it dissolves. Squeeze the sock out once in a while to keep the process going, but try not to let the undissolved particles out and sit on the liner. In large quantities, they can damage a liner. Quick to stir up in small quantities, so don't let that stop you. Sometimes it takes a little bit to dissolve, but will eventually dissolve and mix with the water. Some add the granules to a bucket of water, and "pre-dissolve" them as well before putting in the pool.

When you have your test kit, and all the CYA is in and mixed, try to give it a day before you test. This usually insures a good mix in the pool. Also, you can try and under-shoot the target. CYA doesn't come out of the water unless it splashs out, so its easier to add more than take it out, so err on the side of lower than higher.

I only posted from the pool store because my local walmart doesn't have any pool stuff out anymore
Pool stores are sometimes the go to for chemicals later in the season just because of availability. Just be cautious of the "free" testing, because it is not reliable, and can coax you into other chemicals just not needed. Sometimes the pool store is the only option for chlorine in certain areas, and sometimes it is more expensive, but for chlorine in particular, is just fine, especially knowing everything else.

I regularly buy stabilizer & liquid chlorine at Walmart - where ever u get liquid chlorine be sure to check the Julian date code on the bottle to ensure it’s not old.

Thank you all, now I feel alittle more educated on the startup chemicals. Just got the call my water will be here at 7 am tomorrow. Now it is just hoping my leveling was good but I belive it is. And hopefully I am awake enough to run around plumbing the legs as they are filling it up lol

Last question for now lol but does the sock with the cya in it go infront of the intake that sucks into the filter or the jet that puts the water back into the pool after the filter?
The return “jet” - where water returns to the pool from the pump.
