Filter out of commission for a while - what to do about shocking pool.

My rather old DE filter needs a new o-ring, and it won't arrive for about a week. I can't use the filter until then, because I can't keep the housing from leaking when I close it (hence the need for a new o ring). I have already uncovered the pool, added muriatic acid to bring down the pH, and was ready to SLAM my pool. I don't really want to leave it be without adding any bleach, but I doubt trying to SLAM it without a filter is going to work because the pool still has dirt, leaves, etc. in it. Any suggestions on the best way to keep the algae at bay until I get my DE filter o ring?

Add liquid chlorine. Once or twice a day. Target a total of 5ppm add per day. Use a brush or a sump pump in the pool to mix it.
