Filter Cleaner

I did the MA bath at the end of every season and my 8.5 year old filters were as clean as they were when new. The color didn't help their ability, but they were glow in the dark white. During the season I sprayed them with the hose. The as seen on TV 'turbo jet' available now everywhere *but* the TV really helped my low pressure hose get some oomph. It was just enough to get the crud without worrying about tearing the filter like using a real pressure washer.

I used a big green landscaper bucket for the bath. But I also used it for yard work so every year I had to gorilla tape 5 new leaks. :ROFLMAO:

My buddy was using a 35 gallon (blue plastic) drum. They are pretty cheap like $25 and I'll probably get one just for the filters.

If you have regularly cleaned your cartridges as needed and not let algae build in your pool, Filter Blaster is a quick way to get them cleaner than just water. Be aware that most cartridge manufacturers will recommend that you NOT soak in a acid solution unless you are sure all the organics and oils are off the material first. The acid will react with the oils and form an un-removable film, shortening the life of the cartridge.

Over-night soaking is the best way to get cartridges, and DE grids, clean if the right solution is used. There are some very good commercially available cleaners. You can also use a solution of dishwasher detergent (Cascade, not Dawn), or real TSP to soak in. After these remove the oils, a cleaning with an acid solution can be done if needed. Remember to rinse very well or you can end up with a lot of foam in your pool.

Thank you for the information. One correction: I erred when I said that I soaked the filters in an acid/water solution. It was a TSP solution.

While I am on the subject of filters......my spa filters are Pentair. When it comes time to replace them, are there any aftermarket alternatives that perform as well as the Pentairs? Thank you.

Last season a member bought a Pentair filter and it came with Pleatcos. They probably have made them all along for Pentair, and ran out of the rebranded ones. Either way, Pentair approves of Pleatco being interchangeable.
