Hi all,

Looking to get on the "TFP Program"

In the past, I have just brought water samples to the guys at Leslie's and somewhat did what they told me to....not always because I know they are just trying to sell me stuff.

We drained our pool and had to replace the main drain covers that had expired. We also had to re-epoxy as the previous epoxy job was starting to fade after 7 years.

I filled the pool on the 12th and 13th and started the heater. Pool temp is at 71 degrees (Will be 82 by the weekend but for now I have it set to 70). I couldn't really find a document on starting a pool from empty. I have been running this pool for several years (last year was first year on SWG after converting from Bromine).

My understanding is that first I need to get TA in an acceptable range. Pool Math says my target is 70. I am currently at 130. I had 25lb of dry acid from Leslie's on hand and added that to the pool. (The Leslie's Dry Acid container calculations show I need 40lbs). I want to do the rest the TFP way which to my understanding is Muriatic Acid. The Pool Math App doesn't tell me how much to put in. It just says:
"To lower TA you reduce pH to 7.0-7.2 with acid and then aerate to increase pH."

How do I calculate how much Acid do I need to add? If I enter a LOWER than target number into the PoolMath app, it tells me how much baking soda to put in. Why doesn't it make a reccomendation for a higher than target number?

I have several other issues going on with equipment that I will likely post in other threads, but this thing needs to be open to guests this weekend and I have to make the health dept happy. I can do all the water chemistry manually even if the SWG is not working.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The first thing you should focus on is chlorine and CYA. Add 3ppm of chlorine right away and start 30ppm of stabilizer. Then increase FC to 5ppm. Then worry about pH. TA will take care of itself as you manage the pH.

If you have a salt water chlorine generator, don't use the dry acid. Stick to muriatic.
