Fiberglass pool - replace light and light housing with fiberglass?

Welcome to TFP! ::wave: I know others have decided to remove a light and plug (cover) the hole in various scenarios, but I don't recall anyone doing a FG repair. Makes sense I suppose, but you certainly would want substantial support with the water weight pushing outwards. Let's see if any of our folks in the field have seen such a project. @Poolbreh?

I have done lots of fiberglass repairs albeit to fiberglass boats but the tech is the same. This should be pretty straightforwardif you are familiar with working with fiberglass. If it were me I would want to get a layer of wet fiberglass over that plywood in the back when I screwed it down. clean the backside of the pool wall there so you get some adhesion. Firstly you are going to want to angle grind around the light niche to remove a few layers for fiberglass a few inches back all the way around it. Then make sure the screws are set in this area so they will be below the level of the repair. then you start small and do layer after layer of glass increasing each size until you are covering the grinded area up to the untouched pool shell. I would sand that down so that it is just a sight depression from the wall of the pool and then lastly put down a layer of gelcoat, matching your gelcoat color as closely as possible. Whenever you sand clean off the area with acetone or something before applying a new layer.
