My pool was giving us an itchy rash, and our pool guy gave all sorts of weird theories about why this might be. After testing the chemistry, firing him because it was off and fixing it, I decided to drain it to discover why it was black inside the drain housing.
While walking around inside the pool at night, I discovered that it was lined with fiberglass mat, then painted with one coat of paint, I could still see a few yellow spots around the jets.
What about the drain? The whole housing was missing, and the hydrostatic relief cap was on the bottom. The black on the bottom was bare gunite.
So I hope to repaint the pool with epoxy primer and paint, and plaster around the drain to cover the gunite. I feel that a new drain housing won't necessarily fit, and will block the hydrostatic cap.
Do I need to sand before painting?
Any other thoughts?
