Few random questions

Hi Everyone- Been managing my pool via TFP standards for ~3+ months and so far so good. I debated where to post this so I stuck here in Just Getting Started. I have a few general questions and also wanted to confirm a few things.

First, here's my latest results with my TF-100
FC-8.5 (8AM morning check)
CC-0
PH-7.8
CH-300
TA-80
CYA-60 (still perfecting the test but it's either at 60 or slight above which could be 70)
SALT-3200
TEMP-88

1. Is it necessary to relieve all pressure from my cartridge filter before removing the filter pump lid? I've done both ways, but was curious which way I should be doing as I've been told both.

2. My pool has remained perfectly clear and have continued to stay above the minimum chlorine level for my CYA; I test PH and CL almost daily; full tests once a week. I run my pump ~20 hours a day (low rpm at night) with SWG @ 35% so it puts me a little on the higher range which I do prefer as I see around ~2 or so ppm FC loss on hot/sunny days. I brush the waterline and entire pool once a week.

That said, I am starting to see very minor algae/brown blobs (biofilm?) appear occasionally in some of the harder to brush inner corners of my pool at or right above the water line on the side of my pool that has split-face travertine for waterline (pourous, irregular shapes). Not a lot, but definitely some which brushes off fine after forcing the brush in the tiny crevices.

My question - is it normal to still see this with balanced water? It's my understanding that even with perfectly balanced water, algae WILL still develop eventually from a lack of brushing (another user here used a good analogy like brushing ones teeth which stuck in my head). I'm wondering if I just didn't scrub those areas thorough enough (I do now!) which has me wondering if it was more me missing scrubbing that area or if it's a larger algae problem developing; I don't see it anywhere else.

3. I have some water features on a separate pump - how often do ya'll cycle your features to get fresh/treated water in those areas? I currently have mine cycling once a day for about 5 minutes but wasn't sure if every other day might work just as well.

I appreciate everyone's advice and continue to learn each day! Thanks!

Hello! To your questions:
1 - Maybe not mandatory, but it can help. My pump and filter lids are very tight with pressure if I don't relieve some of it first at the air relief valve.
2 - Sounds look are doing everything right but ... algae? Rats. :hammer: If it is, then a SLAM Processis in order. Perhaps do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test to be sure it is indeed algae? Brushing once per week is typically enough to keep biofilms from developing. Maybe check your water circulation? You might need to do an extra brushing of those stagnant areas. Also make sure if you have a pool light with a niche behind it to remove the light (power OFF) and inspect in that cavity. Anything else in the water like ladder or steps that can be removed as well. Hollow areas are prime algae territory.
3 - You can cycle your water features a little more apart if you wish. Maybe every 2-3 days should be fine as long as they get purged really well.

1. If your pump is off and you have not pressurized the filter with a suction side air leak, there is no pressure at the filter. That said, opening the pressure relief valves confirms that.

2. Your description sounds to me like you are experiencing some algae in the grout lines and other "nooks and crannies" around your pool. If you pass the OCLT, simple brush those areas more frequently.

An update:
1) Did OCLT and passed! Took reading at 8:45p @ 6.5 FC; took another at 6:30a @ 6 FC
2) Also sprayed 50/50 bleach water on suspect spot and it did dissolve in about 15ish minutes on its own.

That said taking this as just more concentrated scrubbing needed in these areas.

I agree.

We can NEVER get everything perfectly clean in our pools and even the best kept ones need a little brushing and tweaking now and then. Sounds like you are doing a nice job with your pool.
