So I have that issue plenty of people have. Powerful return jet (since I switched to cartridge filter from DE), close to the surface, creates the whirlpooling vortex that creates a huge, loud, scary noise when the air vortex reaches the return. I've tried many different "eyeball" positions and today I just took the eyeball out of the fixture.
Can anyone advise on whether this is a good idea? The noise has gone away. So, success on that front. The psi on my filter is now only about 9, where it used to be 15-18... I can guess why that would happen, but I don't know if there are any drawbacks to it. Also the return seems a little aerated, with the wide return stream visibly bubbly.
Any of those seem like issues? FWIW I am keeping the eyeball and will likely put it in place for when I need a powerful jet return, like to drop chemicals in front of the stream to broadcast throughout the pool.
