I purchased this house 5 months ago. It was built, and I'm assuming the pool dug, in 1999. From the general look of things, nothing in the house was properly maintained; just replaced when it died. I had to put $9k into replacing all of the pool equipment, except the filter and heater, immediately after moving into the house just to get it into a swimmable state.
I just got around to opening the filter egg up and taking a look at the actual filters. I was not expecting to see what I saw.
It was just straight mud on the inside; filters totally black. I pulled them out, sprayed out the egg, and nothing but mud and dirt poured out of the bottom drain. I sprayed the filters out, but it didn't help at all, so I just ordered new ones and when I put them side by side, I couldn't help but laugh. It's a small miracle that my pool was as crystal clear as it was. I'm legitimately shocked.
I put the new filters in just in time for California wildfire season. The pool looked like an ashy crater after last week. After running the pump for 48 straight hours, it completely cleared up, so I'm super excited to check the filters again in a month or so.
