How does Buffer Intensity affect the CSI?
Comparing the change from a TA of 60 to 70ppm compared to a change from 120 to 130ppm. Edit; not sure the vast majority of us need to consider it or if it even matters considering CSI is about probability. End Edit.

Yeh, I’m thinking the idea is more of a hindrance then help. That section in CSI really needs a preamble, or deletion? It’s the sink hole of the deep end.

And then I agree with you with the pH bit, even more confusing to the point of asking, “is it a typo”. Wojtowics is talking about the effect of pH change on precipitation rather then CSI, or the other way around, how precipitation affects pH. Either way, Wojtowics is no longer with us so asking is kind of hard.

To everyone: I’m so sorry.

In all seriousness, it’s good to know I’m not imagining things: increasing pH increases CSI, promoting calcium precipitation/scaling. (TDS / CYA / borates apparently decrease CSI, so that’s my bad.)

In other news: How wonky is it that calcium actually becomes less solvent with increasing temperature.

Don’t be sorry, asking and questioning will always lead to improvement which helps everyone. If you’ve thought that was ambiguous then many others have thought the same but not asked.

With CSI it’s not so much about actual solvency but the potential or chances of solvency if that makes sense.

Thanks for the kind words; I was actually being more facetious than contrite: I didn’t expect to cause such a vigorous debate. (But it was fun to read!)

The potential certainly makes more sense. With a vinyl liner, I keep the pH, alk & CH low (7.2, 60, <150); I now know the borates, CYA, and salt can only help. My CSI is between -0.8 and -1.0, and scale is hardly around, either on my SWCG cell or my heat pump (as far as I can tell). is there any downside in a vinyl pool to be running a CSI that low?
