Endlessly cloudy

Howdy folks,

New here - bought a Taylor K-2006 kit and started using it a week ago to clear up a pool that was dark green upon opening. Before I started using the kit, just dumping a bunch of liquid chlorine in got us from dark green to cloudy - and we've been at cloudy ever since. I've been using the PoolMath app to SLAM as much as I can, using Austin's Pool Tech Shock (12.5% liquid chlorine). Weekends have been a few times a day but on weekdays I can usually only get to it once in the morning and once in the evening.

Definitely took me some trial and error to figure out what I was doing and what my different levels are, but at this point I feel like I'm at a standstill. I am following the SLAM process and adding gallons of chlorine each day but not seeing any differences. I'm also brushing the sides, vacuuming once or twice a day, backwashing/rinsing once a day as well. At this point, I have completely run out of R-0871 and nobody local sells it, so it's going to be at least a few days before I can accurately test for FC. Levels as of yesterday were hovering around 14 FC. CYA has been 58 and 60. I had measured my pH back last week at 7.2 but I read that I didn't need to continue testing it until the SLAM process was done.

At this point, it just feels like I'm doing something wrong - I've been dumping in chlorine for about a week now - probably at least 16 gallons' worth (unfortunately I don't think my logs are completely accurate as I think we missed some addditions) and it just seems like the cloudiness isn't changing at all.

In the absence of being able to accurately test without R-0871 for a few days...any suggestions? Anything I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Dark green pool is gonna take a while. A week isn’t particularly long for a really swampy pool. Sounds like you’re doing everything you can. Testing/adding more frequently would help speed it up but life is the way it is.

Is this your pool? Consider opening earlier or closing later next year to avoid the swamp when opening. It’s a little more work on the front end but saves the SLAM hassle later.

Yes, it is my pool - we closed it in not-great condition, to be honest. I assumed it would stay dark green for a really long time after we opened, but surprisingly that color changed to the current blue/cloudy color after maybe 4-6 gallons of chlorine (this was before I got the Taylor kit).

I'd suggest a good brushing of the floor of the pool also- just not sure if vacuuming is enough to disrupt any biofilm protecting algae?
Can you please fill out a signature line to describe your pool- various features may require attention that we're missing without knowing what you've got. https://www.troublefreepool.com/account/signature
Thanks!
