Either with a pool and broke, or without a pool and broke!

I have a long way to go before a pool is in place, but TFP is a great place to document the journey. It has been very informative and I figured I’d share the trip. I’m still not sure where it will end…either with a pool and out of money, or without a pool and out of money! Reminds me of owning a boat…

Here is the backyard from different views. Currently, I am having trees removed for more direct sunlight and fewer leaves. The previous homeowner had an inground pool that they filled in before selling the house. Neighbors say that they were swimming in it up to the near-time that they placed the house on the market; the realtor says that the pool had cracked and therefore the owners filled it in. Oh well.

Local pool construction companies won’t touch this area for installing another inground. They have all said that digging out the old pool and its lines will compromise the integrity of the sloped area at the back of the yard. I’m currently waiting to hear back from a fiberglass pool company to see if they can make it work. However, I’m not likely to go that route due to expense. I’m very comfortable with the picture I have already painted in my head with an AGP fitting into the current elevations of my yard.

I am hoping to have a retaining wall built from pool ground-level all the way up to the upper yards ground-level. That will be a retaining wall of about 7’. $$$. The “over-the-pool-rail” deck will then run back into that retaining wall at about 58” from pool ground-level. With the pool deck at that height, there will be approx. 2-2.5 feet of retaining wall above the deck where it is even with the upper yard.

So, this is my start point. I’m focusing on the landscape: Getting the downed trees off of the property, and I have 50 Schip Laurels arriving this week and will need to get them in the ground. This will form a hedge row along the right side of the property where a seldom-traveled gravel road exists.

This will be a slow process, happening as money is available. I’m thinking by the end of 2018, I may have a functional pool just in time to have to close it for winter. But boy, will spring of 2019 be awesome. Below are some pics:

Thanks for the link to the Baltimore Pool Build, Maddie. I had actually seen a picture of his finished build while glancing through the photo gallery, but not the whole build. So, thanks again. His slope is a lot like mine, but since my pool is likely to be an above ground, the deck will sit higher and cover up a lot of the retaining wall. Kinda like money spent for something that will be hidden below deck level.
