Our pool for the past year has a earthy "compost smell" coming from the water when you are in the pool swimming. You cannot smell anything when there is no water movement (Splashing and or swimming in pool). I just took a water sample this morning and you cannot smell anything in the sample???? Can there be gases coming through the pool liner? The liner in the shallow end has nearly faded away (was replaced six years ago). The odor also gets into your swim suits and I can smell it in the filter bag of our robotic cleaner. Also, last July I replaced the sand in our filter. Here are the water test results from this morning : Cl 1, Br 2, Ph 7.5, FC 1.5, CC.5, TC2, TA 70, CYA 50. Water temp 74*, time of test 8:00a.m. I added 125 ounces of (12%) bleach to pool water to bring up the Cl level. Any suggests on how to get rid of the odor would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Frank

Thanks for your response. We were gone for three days. When we left the FC was at 8. When we got back it had dropped to 1.5. When we opened the pool (May 28) we slammed the pool for five days when all three criteria were finally met. Been checking the pool FC three times a day, it will be at 7 in the morning but drop down to 3.5 by 8:00 pm. Been adding between 65 to 80 ounces of chlorine a day. I guess my new question is 3-3.5 drop in FC during the day normal??? Also, when I test during the evening the FC only drops by 1 the following morning. Water is crystal clear. CYA is still at 50.Thanks again!

A 3-3.5 ppm drop per 24 hour period is normal.

You might bump up your target FC each evening to 8 or 9 ppm.

Thank you! I will bump up the FC to 8 or 9. Again, this site has been great! You people really know what your talking about, I love not going to the pool store each week and just handing over money and be back again in a few days with the same problems!!!! Keep up the good work!

These are the stains on our liner (which is about six years old). Most of the liner has faded away... but it has a lot of these whitish gray colored stains throughout the pool (sides and floor). We want to get the liner replaced but would like to know what's going on. The stains began to appear last year. We had a huge down pour for about three hours today, have not cleaned the pool yet. Any help or direction would be appreciated.
