Brand new heater throwing an E05 error. Had Pentair out about a month ago and they changed out SFS and it still gave them the error. They recommended having gas meter upgrade, so I did that last week and still get the error. I’ve adjusted flow rate of water and still E05. Pool is 4 months old and still under warranty and as such I don’t want to tinker with it and break anything. PB is submitting warranty ticket with Pentair to have them come back out again and check. Hoping they can fix the issue.

While running, pressing and holding the On button for about 5 seconds will display the exhaust temperature display.

Here is what the normal exhaust temperature should be:

  • Below 250 degrees...very low
  • 250 to 290 ..................low
  • 290 to 350.................acceptable
  • 350 to 480 ..................high
  • Above 480...................error/shutdown.
Note: HD models can be up to 75 degrees higher. HD models use a cupro nickel exchanger and the efficiency is slightly lower resulting in less heat transfer and more waste heat.

If the exhaust gas temperature is higher then normal then water may be bypassing the heat exchanger through a broken bypass valve.

If you hold down the "pool on" button, it stays on 80, then flashes to 40, then back to 80, then the 80/40 reading and E05 indicate that the board is not getting a reading from the sensor. It's usually a bad sensor or damaged wires.

Can you show pictures of everything?

James - here are a few pics. Just ran it again at 47GPM. It runs for about 2 mins and cuts off and displays the E05.

I’ve tried holding the Pool/Spa button down to display the exhaust temp and I’m not able to get that to work. Last time I tried, the Pool/Spa button got stuck and I had to wait several minutes for it to pop back out.

I’m wondering if something else is going on besides the SFS and gas meter, as Pentair changed out the SFS and I had meter upgraded.

Silly question. Heater is currently controlled by easy touch and by screen logic app. I can only turn heater on by easy touch or screen logic or easy touch but not with heater control panel. Maybe this is why I can’t see the stack flu temp. How do I get control from the panel?

Is your heater controlled by the fireman's switch or the RS-485 interface.

If it has the RS-485 interface, you might be able to get the stack flue temperature from screen logic, but I am not sure.

If you can't get it from the screen logic and you have the RS-485, switch to Service mode and run the heater from the heater control panel and then get the stack flue temperature.

He really didn’t know what he was doing and he did not check the stack flu temp. He just witnessed the issue and submitted the ticket.

I’ll try to put in service mode and see if I can check stack flu temp once this storm rolls through.

If the SFS reads 80, then flashes to 40, then back to 80, then the 80/40 reading and E05 indicate that the board is not getting a reading from the sensor.

It's usually a bad sensor or damaged wires.

If the sensor and wiring are good, the board is probably bad.

Disconnect the sensor and check continuity across its terminals.

Resistance should be 3.5-4.0 megaohms.

Maybe the SFS wires are not connected?

Back in business. Was a simple fix. I disconnected the two red terminal connectors of the sfs and then plugged back in. What I noticed was that one terminal was not seating properly (plastic casing of terminal was in between the metal tabs). This was missed by Pentair rep who came out for my first warranty ticket and most likely caused by PB electrician.
