My father-in-law just completed a 100% drain and refill on a 19K gallon IG plaster pool (non-SWG) and he has been successfully converted to the TFP method. Unfortunately, a mother mallard hatched 11 ducklings in his yard a few weeks ago and have taken up temporary residence. Only 7 ducklings remain. The ducks enjoy swimming and dropping poop torpedoes down to the bottom. The drain and refill was just completed earlier this week. We will work on dropping TA and raising CYA a bit more.
Two nights ago after sunset he bumped FC up to 10 ppm. We tested yesterday afternoon and got the following results:
FC 4
CC 0
pH 7.4
TA 180
CH 225
CYA 30 (increasing to 40)
With the exception of duck feces on the bottom, the pool is clear. I was surprised to see no CCs, but the FC drop was significant. I'm thinking since we tested in the late afternoon, the CCs burned off during the day. For now, I suggested he target an FC of 10...not quite shock level
The ducks will likely be around for another two to three weeks or so. The pool will not be used until the ducks are gone, but we need advice on maintaining the pool in the meantime. Should we maintain at shock level, or just make sure his FC does not drop below minimum levels? Dad is not worried about the cost of additional chlorine and added maintenance.
