A recent post about using a chiller led made me wonder if dry ice would cool the pool for special events. I knew someone who would drop it in the pool for special effects. Your mentioning the possibility of a crack occurring in the plaster may be enough of a reason for me not to consider letting it sink to the bottom. The only thing I've noticed is that dry ice tends to sink to the bottom. It bothers me to have a very cold chunk of dry ice sitting on the plaster where it will locally cool the spot. I'd be worried about creating small hairline cracks from the thermal expansion differences.
