Downsizing from 2HP single speed to 1.5HP VS motor

Hi All,

So I currently have a single speed 2HP 3450 RPM motor. My pool is pretty small at 12,000 gallons with a built in spa (that has some jets) that 'spills-over' into the pool. I've calculated that I probably need about 25GPM to cycle the water over an 8 hour period and I *think* i have about 23 average feet of head. My piping looks to be 3inch piping.

I was looking at the Hayward SP2303VSP MaxFlo VS. My concern is that its only 1.65HP. That said, its max RPM range is 3450 like my existing. I'm a little new to all this so im trying my best to calculate it. Based on these numbers do you guys think that the MaxFlo would work in my application? My fear is that i accidently undersize and I can't run the jets on the spa, though based on at least the RPM rating I think i should at least be able to push what I can now? I also have a cartridge filter.

In normal day to day I plan to use it in as low as RPM as possible to save power, so its more about using the spa every so often.

Thank you for your help
Jon

Welcome to the forum! :handshake:

With a spa, I would suggest a full power VS pump. I have a Pentair Intelliflo (011018). It is rated at 3 HP but that does not really matter as it is a 'variable hp' pump. You only run it at the speed you need.

Will you be installing this DIY? Some forum members have been purchasing the Pentair pump above through Amazon and getting the extended warranty offered through Amazon for a very reasonable price. Pentair will only warranty for 60 days with DIY.

FYI -- 'turnover' is meaningless in pools. You only need to run your pump long enough to create chlorine if using a SWCG, distribute chlorine if using liquid chlorine, and long enough to clean the pool, including skimming. Some members use as little as a couple hours a day of pump run time, others 24 hours a day.

If you are interested in learning more about TFPC, I suggest you read Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Trouble Free Pool School book.
