I have a Doheny Dolphin that is about 5 years old. It just stopped working. The light blinks for about one minute and then stops. During that time the blower seems to be working because I can see the water disturbance and it looked like moved an inch or two but that is it. Is there anything I can do to fix this myself or do I have to send it in for repair.

You can look at the impeller and see if there is anything wrapped around it. It may still spin but if there is extra load on the impeller, the cleaner will shut down.

Also, either motor failing will cause these types of symptoms. If you are handy, you can replace the brushes in the motor but that usually doesn't last very long. A new motor assembly is almost the cost of a new cleaner so you are better off buying new.

Have you replaced the wheel hubs? After 5 years, they would be pretty worn. When worn, the cleaner will stutter when trying to move but it doesn't sound like this may be the issue.

Yes, it will run out of water for a little while. You need to place it on something in the middle to elevate the tracks so it doesn't move.

I have not replaced anything. It doesn't really stutter, moves an inch or two and stops. Will it run out of water? can i turn it on out of the pool to try to listen if the motor is trying to work?

Yes. The self test sequence is to put it up on blocks (cut pieces of 2x4 work great) then open up the robot and take the filter out. Turn on the robot and let it run through its startup sequence. The impeller motor should cycle through three different speeds which will all have a slightly different sound to them. The treads should move forward and backwards.

Your problem sounds like a motor assembly failure (either drive or impeller motor). The repair is to replace the entire assembly which is running around $500 these days. That’s basically half or more of the cost of a new unit. Makes more sense to toss the old robot and buy a new one. The individual motors are replaceable but they are hard to come by. There’s a seller overseas on eBay that sells scavenged parts. Not worth it in my opinion as this failure is just one of many that will start to happen with an old robot. You’ll be dumping good money into a failing product.
