Do I need to replace my sand?

So it's been 3 years since I purchased my Intex Sand Filter. I read that the sand should be replaced every 3-4 years. So I bought new sand on Amazon (same kind I bought 3 years ago) and opened up my sand filter and found this (see pictures).

The sand looks... unused. It seriously looks still brand new (at least at the top). I mean there are small chunks (almost looks like kitty poop in a litter lol) but overall the sand looks good. So I'm not sure what to do? Do I still replace? Maybe it needs to be replaced I just can't see the sand because it's towards the bottom? I know I probably sound like an idiot but I'm just not sure :)

Thanks!

What you have discovered is why we teach that sand never needs replaced. It's just a rumor pushed by salespeople and pool techs who don't fully understand water chemistry. Sand does not break down, the only reason it ever needs replaced is because of certain pool chemicals that we don't recommend or a Baquacil to Chlorine conversion.

Doubt it is worthwhile to return the pool sand (unrelated, but for something that heavy and readily available locally it is not a good idea to buy it online) but no reason to change it at all. I would just throw a hose in and get that gunk on top out, we call it Deep Cleaning and seal it up and put it back to work.
