Diatomaceous Earth....how much?

I would like to add some DE to my sand filter and am wondering how much? The smallest bag I can get from the pool store is 10lbs. I read the article on DE and it explains how to add it well enough but I am a bit more confused about how much to add and when to stop adding it. How many pounds should I expect to use ? Is the end game to add 1 PSI to my filter pressure and then stop adding? And if so, at what pump RPM? Any further tips, tricks or advise is much appreciated.

As the directions for adding state.... start slow and note your initial pool filter gauge reading. Add say, 1/2 cup... wait 5 minutes or so and go see if your pool filter gauge raised any? If 1ppm increase, stop adding. If it didn't increase, add a little more and recheck.

My pool takes about 3/4 cup.

I have a single speed pump so I can't comment on your ideal speed.

Is this a one and done thing? or is it an annual add? I guess I am wondering why they sell it in 10lb bags if you only need up to a couple of cups at most.

Its sold so for those pool owners with DE filters. We've just learned that we can borrow some and slip a bit into our sand filter at the top of the sand and get better filtration.
