There IS support under them - the panel rack is overlayed with chicken wire - the solar panels lay on top of all that. They are secured with black bungies. The bottom edge of the rack has a 2x4 ledge/lip that the panels rest on so they don't slide off at the slant (45 deg angle) - the pictures up there are from the building process before the system was done so all of the support and finishing touches were not on.

I do not notice much loss of "head" on the return - the water is still turned over pretty quickly.
