Good afternoon,
Any help or advice you can provide would greatly appreciated. This is my 4th summer with my 18K gallon in-ground, vinyl, chlorine pool. Sadly, I've had different problems every season. First it was the multiport valve, then the pump, then the sand filter. Now I'm dealing with a significant leak. We were told that the current liner was only "a few years old" when we bought the house in 2020, "Pool as-is". The leaking started around a month ago and progressed to the point where I was losing 1.5" to 2" of water overnight. The nighttime photo is the way the deep end looked in September, 2021. The day-time photo is a couple weeks ago. It appears to be slowly caving in underneath the liner. This past Friday I had a leak detection guy come out and he found the leak almost right away. He says it's underneath the main drain (on the right). His official diagnosis is: "With the collapse of the bottom, the liner ripped underneath the housing of the bottom drain. The liner needs to be pulled out and the bottom needs to be repaired." He patched underneath of the drain (photo with arrow), to hopefully slow the leak. It's still leaking now, but much less, maybe .25" overnight.
My next step is reaching out to the company that installed the liner for the previous owner of my house to see if there could be a warranty or something. Assuming there isn't or there is a warranty, but this isn't covered, can the liner be saved? Or is it a lost cause? If I close the pool in September as planned and do nothing, it will continue to leak over the winter and potentially ruin the liner. Should I be proactive and replace the liner before I close the pool in September? I feel like the latter option would prevent me from stressing about it all winter. Curious if homeowner's insurance would cover at least some of the cost.

Hi and welcome to TFP. I am sorry to be meeting this way :(

My gut says you need to repair that are asap. The more the water leaks the worse the bottom of the pool will become as the water is still washing away the dirt/sand/whatever is under it. That will make more work when you do fix it. You will also have to keep adding water so it does not leak all out over the winter.

I say look in your wallet to see if you can find the money to go ahead and replace the liner now. Better now than later in the long run.

As for the warranty and such It does not hurt to ask but I would not hold out much hope :(
